Super Bowl 51
Sunday February 5th
New England Patriots vs Atlanta Falcons
With just under a week until kick off we have a few game day ideas to make things a little easier for you:
Ready Set Eat!
One of the best things about hosting a Super Bowl party is you don’t need to worry about fine wines or gourmet foods. The greasier, the more sauce piled on and the higher in calories the better. Rules of thumb are simple: don’t make any food that requires you to be in the kitchen while the game is on; and the more you can make the day before the better
Think … crockpot of chili or pulled pork. Both can be made in advance and with fresh buns on the side guests can help themselves all evening. BBQ meatballs and wings are also easy and total fan favourites. Pair with dill dip and veggie sticks and you have a full meal.
For snacks, go for a Hall of Fame worthy “Super Bowl Nacho Bar” with all the fixins’ like melted cheese sauce, sour cream, jalapenos, green onions, pico de gallo and refried beans. Chips, popcorn and nuts are a must as are bowls of candy. And for dessert, purchase chocolate ice cream bars and decorate with white icing to look like football laces.
Drinks
Three Little Words: GET A KEG. or a mini Keg if you have a small crowd. It is festive and screams, “Let’s get this party started”! For guests that don’t want a beer have tubs full of great drink selections like Perrier, San Pellegrino, flavoured fizzy water and Root Beer. If you have a large beverage dispenser fill it with water and make a sign that says WATER BREAK. All of the drinks should be placed together on a table with glasses, ice and a bottle opener so guests can help themselves.
Big Screen TV and Lots of Seating
Before you start to decorate make sure your space is the perfect viewing area for your guests. If you have a large TV … great. Otherwise consider renting a screen and projector for the day. Costs are minimal, but the effect is nothing less than grand. With the TV taken care of turn your attention to seating. Re-arrange your couches and sofas in an L or U shape and bring in extra seating so everyone has a view of the TV. Add some chairs behind the couches or throw some oversized pillows or bean bags in front for additional seating options.
Décor
One of our favourite ideas is to create a football field table for your food. Purchase a small strip of turf from Home Depot or the Dollar Store. Paint yard lines to look like a football field and use as table runner. Or if you are not a DYI kind of person head to a party store and purchase a football field plastic table cover for under $10. Paint mason jars to look like a football and fill with straws, cutlery or just as décor on your table. Chalkboard signs with your own personalized game plays or Vince Lombardi quotes such as “Winners never quit and quitters never win” and “It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up” are a great way to up your party ante. Or for those you are strapped for time party stores offer pre-packaged themed decorations. Banners, Flags, inflatable footballs, paper plates (so you have no clean up!) are inexpensive and totally acceptable for Super Bowl parties.
Props for your Guests
Costumes and Props are a must at a Super Bowl Party. The Falcons are wearing their red jerseys and Patriots are wearing white you can purchase lots of spirit wear in each team colour. Party City and the Dollar Store are great places to load up on Atlanta or New England team colours. Eye Black stickers (sold at stores like Sport Chek, National Sports) are a fun addition as well as over sized Foam Fingers. And to kick it up a notch, make some Tom Brady and Matt Ryan face masks for your guests to hold up when their team scores.
